Rejuvenation for the Creative Mind

The Star of the Show

Main Fountains

If the Conservatory District is the jewel of Longwood, the Main Fountain District is the star. Pierre S. du Pont based the district on the great water gardens of Europe and exhibits at world’s fairs and expositions. Four times throughout the day, 1,719 fountain jets perform choreography to music. In addition during the summer, Longwood offers a 30-minute illuminated fountain performance when evening falls.

With the memories of our adventures resonating in our hearts, my comrades and I nestled down in our folding chairs to watch the illuminated show. Once the lights darkened, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake music permeated the air. The fountain waters soared, changed colors, swayed, and ignited into flames to retell the story of two star-crossed lovers. The effect left us breathless.

Places such as Longwood Gardens are important to the creative soul. Like balm, they heal, refresh and inspire. We emerge from the experience renewed and ready to conquer a new adventure.
