An Old Place That Never Ages

Useful Planning Details

For this trip, I purchased an annual pass. It included general admission to the historic site for a whole year. Additionally, it acted like travel insurance if I had to cancel and reschedule the trip.

To organize my visit, I started with travel arrangements. Colonial Williamsburg is four hours from my hometown, which is two hours over my driving limit. For me, the train is the next best option. However, Amtrak only runs two trains to and from Williamsburg each day, one in the early morning and another in the late afternoon. These options affect scheduling activities at the historic site. To take advantage of the broadest range of programs, I took the early morning train, stayed in Williamsburg at the Best Western for two nights, and returned home on the late afternoon train. That gave me two half days and one full day to schedule activities — nice.

My trip took place in late September. As always, Colonial Williamsburg offered an impressive array of programs. I chose mostly staged performances, a format Williamsburg does best.
