An Old Place That Never Ages

Opportunities Along Duke of Gloucester Street

My selections kept me along Duke of Gloucester Street, the main thoroughfare. Besides viewing staged performances on this main street, visitors can shop, tour buildings, watch craft demonstrations, and take carriage rides. Costumed interpreters strategically positioned along the street offer directions and answer questions. Even something as simple as a bench offers great opportunities. It can be a place to strike up an eye-opening conversation or a resting place to appreciate the sun.

Interpreters positioned along Duke of Gloucester Street

My favorite performances featured two of my least favorite nation builders, Martha Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Both Mrs. Washington and Jefferson were conflicted when it came to the treatment of enslaved people. However, the interpreters who portrayed these two nation builders brought them to life in such a way that I saw them living, aging, thinking, and weighing decisions. They became humans, no longer mere descriptions in a history book. It was exquisitely done.
